Good knight to a dame as Tony Abbott revives titles
TONY Abbott has used his prime ministerial prerogative to revive the titles of knights and dames, an honour bestowed by the Queen that has lain dormant in Australian life for almost three decades.
The staunch monarchist’s decision has raised a few eyebrows, especially after he bypassed his cabinet colleagues, and ruffled republicans but he won plaudits from supporters of the Queen.

ICAC target Nick Di Girolamo was paying himself a salary of more than $1 million a year at Australian Water Holdings while the firm was on the brink of collapse.
The businessman’s company also donated $67,637 to the Liberal and National Parties from 2008 to 2011 as it sought to resolve a contract dispute with Sydney Water despite Treasury advice saying it had “net assets worth $36”.
ICAC, which will begin hearings into Australian Water Holdings on Monday, announced it would broaden its inquiries to look at Mr Di Girolamo’s salary and that of other AWH executives.
Mr Di Girolamo was eventually forced out of the company in April 2013 with “a token payment” after he had the firm take a $5 million loan from four business people and was unable to pay it back, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

HSU wants $400,000 more from disgraced former MP and fraudster Craig Thomson
He said Thomson, 49, passing off a $770 receipt for sex with a prostitute called Alina as a “dinner function” was a clear example of his dishonesty.
The one-time rising star of the Labor Party slumped in his chair as the magistrate found him guilty of six charges of obtaining financial advantage by deception for paying almost $6000 for escorts. He was also found guilty of 16 charges of theft for cash withdrawals totalling $6250 and for using the card to pay for cigarettes and travel expenses for his then wife Christa. Other charges including paying for pornographic movies in hotel rooms were dismissed.
Thomson had pleaded not guilty to 145 charges of theft and deception totalling $28,449 relating to the misuse of his union credit card between 2002 and 2008. He faces up to five years in jail.
